Rui-Yang Zhang

I am currently a second year Computational Statistics and Machine Learning PhD student of STOR-i CDT at Lancaster University and am supported by ARC TIDE Hub in Australia. My supervisors are Henry Moss, David Leslie, Lachlan Astfalck and Edward Cripps.

I am broadly interested in the decision-making aspect of Bayesian computational statistics and machine learning. In particular, my research focuses on developing sequential Bayesian designs – such as active learning and Bayesian optimization – for application areas including probabilistic numerics and ocean engineering. I am also exploring what post-Bayesian ideas could offer for more robust and efficient decision-making.

Previously, I did BSc Mathematics and Statistical Science at UCL where I was mentored by Sam Livingstone and received a Royal Statistical Society Award.
